WHO WE ARE

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • TO EXPAND AND STRENGTHEN WASTE-PICKERS NETWORKS AT THE INTERNATIONAL, REGIONAL, NATIONAL AND LOCAL LEVELS.
  • TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR RIGHTS AND BENEFITS COLLECTIVELY.
  • TO BUILD AND STRENGTHEN THE CAPACITY AND LEADERSHIP OF WASTE-PICKERS AT ALL LEVELS OF ASSOCIATION.
  • TO WORK ON STRATEGIES TO ENSURE THAT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT HEAR WASTE PICKERS’ CONCERN AND RESPOND TO THEM.
  • TO BUILD AN INFORMATION BASE BANK OF ALL WASTE PICKERS IN THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, DISAGGREGATED BY GENDER
  • TO DOCUMENT AND DISSEMINATE INFORMATION ON THE EFFECTIVE ORGANIZED STRATEGIES FOR PROMOTING AND PROTECTING THE RIGHTS OF WASTE-PICKERS.
  • TO BRIDGE THE CLASS DIFFERENCE WHICH EXIST BETWEEN THE WASTE-PICKERS AND OTHER INFORMAL WASTE WORKERS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, THE ASSOCIATION SHALL PRIORITIZE THE UPLIFTMENT OF THE POOREST AND MOST MARGINALIZED WASTE WORKERS.
  • TO PROMOTE THE DIGNITY OF WASTE-PICKERS LIVELIHOODS LOCALLY, NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY.
  • TO CREATE AWARENESS AT LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTION OF WASTE PICKERS IN RECYCLING, SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT, ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION AND CLIMATIC CHANGE MITIGATION.
  • TO FORMULATE PROGRAMS AND ADVOCATE FOR HEALTHY, SAFE AND SECURE WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL WASTE-PICKERS FREE FROM TOXIC WASTE AND OTHER HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES, INCLUDING CHANGES IN MANUFACTURING PROCESSES AND MATERIALS IMPACTING WASTE PICKERS HEALTH.
  • TO OPPOSE AT A LOCAL, NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL UNSUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES OF WASTE INCINERATION IN ALL FORMS.
  • TO OPPOSE DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT OF WASTE-PICKERS FROM MUNICIPAL, LOCAL, STATE OF OTHER AUTHORITIES.
  • TO ADVOCATE FOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED RECYCLING FEES TO WASTE-PICKERS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION.
  • TO WORK WITH AFFILIATES, GOVERNMENTS AND OTHER ASSOCIATION.
  • TO FACILITATE EDUCATION OF CHILDREN OF WASTE PICKERS AND IMPROVED ACCESS TO CHILD-CARE SO AS TO ENSURE THAT CHILD LABORS IS ABOLISHED.
  • TO WORK TOWARDS ELIMINATING UNFAIR TRADE PRACTICES IN WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING FEES TO WASTE-PICKERS LIVELIHOODS.
  • TO ENCOURAGE ALL BRANCHES AFFILIATES WHO DO NOT HAVE ESTABLISHED YOUTH STRUCTURES IN THEIR OWN ASSOCIATION.
  • TO REPRESENT WASTE-PICKERS AND THEIR ASSOCIATION IN THE INTERNATIONAL.
  • TO WORK IN SOCIAL PARTNERSHIP WITH NGOS, UNIVERSITIES AND INSTITUTIONS WHO WORK WITH AND IN SUPPORT OF WASTE-PICKERS GOALS AND CONSTITUTION OF THE " ALLIANCE".
  • TO ADVOCATE FOR PRESERVATION OF WASTE-PICKERS’ LIVELIHOODS BY IMPROVING ACCESS TO WASTE AS WELL AS THE INTEGRATION OF INFORMAL WASTE PICKERS INTO FORMAL WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING SYSTEMS.
  • TO BRING WASTE-PICKERS INTO THE MAINSTREAM OF, AND ENSURE THEY PLAY A CENTRAL ROLE IN DRAFTING POLICIES AND LAWS WHICH AFFECT THEIR LIVELIHOODS, SUCH AS THOSE RELATING TO WASTE MANAGEMENT, ZERO WASTE, EXPENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITIES, URBAN PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION.
  • TO ADVOCATE FOR OCCUPATIONAL IDENTITY, SOCIAL WELFARE, SOCIAL SECURITY AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR ALL WASTE-PICKERS.
